In Mark 2:28 Jesus claims to be the “Lord of the Sabbath.” At the very least, “Lord” in this context has to mean “master”, or “sovereign”, or “King”, if you will. Jesus was therefore claiming to be the King over the day on which God rested. If that is NOT a claim to be God, I’m not sure what is. One ought to keep in mind as well that Mark is considered to be the earliest gospel by the vast majority of New Testament scholars today, thus showing that the highest christology possible existed from the earliest days of the Church, at least as far as we can tell (contra Dan Brown).
